International Women’s Day was celebrated differently by the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) this year. The institution held a Human Rights Dialogue that was organised by the Department of Social Justice and Transformation in collaboration with the Department of Arts & Culture on 8 March at the Desmond Tutu Great Hall.
The event was themed: “Decolonising of the academy is a human rights matter – or is it not?”
Human Rights Day is a very significant event for the country and this is the month where different organisations and people engage to better understand the historic events of the day. Dr Abraham Serote, Director: Social Cohesion, Arts and Culture said that decolonising needs to start within us and engage students within the higher learning sector. He set a challenge to the audience of starting to speak their languages without mixing it with any other. This challenge will help the nation to start with decolonising, he said.
Other speakers also elaborated on matters relating to human rights and gave their inputs. Students and the public at large also contributed by giving comments and questions to the speakers.
