It is an international fact that small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) have considerable potential for contributing to sustainable growth and employment creation.
With this in mind, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) wants to exploit this potential and has identified technological innovation and the upgrading of related skills as being of vital importance to the competitiveness of South African SMMEs.
To support this endeavour, technology stations have been established at selected higher education institutions. The Technology and Innovation Agency (TIA) was established to support these technology stations as part of a full value chain of technology and innovation support.

Management and Funding Support
The Technology Station for materials and processing technologies (TSMPT) assists SMME manufacturers of metal-based products and composite-based products to not only improve their products, but their product knowledge, processes, process knowledge and skills. VUT willingly assists and guides potential clients with any viable and marketable products and ideas. This support extends to the acquisition of potential funding, through institutions like the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Limited (IDC).
This financial support is provided through their Support Programme for Industrial Innovation (SPII). The Product Process Development (PPD) Scheme is intended to promote innovation and technology development through the provision of financial assistance for the development of new products and/or processes. VUTs assistance extends to not only design and development, but also client assistance in the actual SPII funding applications, project management and auditing of relevant SPII projects.
