Additive Manufacuring

The facility functions as a service bureau, supporting local industry and entrepreneurs, as well as providing research support to local and international researchers. It currently offers the highest resolution polymer laser sintering in South Africa.

The additive manufacturing (AM) facility at the VUT Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park offers a range of prototyping and manufacturing technologies, including 3D printing (3DP), fused deposition modelling (FDM) and laser sintering (LS). The facility has the ability to create useable prototypes and final components quickly and accurately, in a range of materials.

PMMA

Casting sand for metal casting

 

Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM):

ABS M30

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate ISO

Ultem 9085

 

Laser Sintering (LS):

PA2200 Polyamide (nylon)

Alumide® (aluminium-filled nylon)

 

Sintered and 3D-printed parts are used to validate computer-aided design (CAD), as one-off components, or as small batch production components. These technologies allow for rapid product development.

This state of the art facility is constantly expanding and remains on the cutting edge of AM technology.
