I2P is a self-help laboratory for product development and innovation at the Vaal University of Technology – with the objective of empowering the students, staff and community to develop their ideas into a prototype.
The VUTs aim in creating the I2P facility is to provide young students with the opportunity to familiarise themselves with 3D printing on the Cartesian plane. The I2P uses newfound interest to convert the 2D information into 3D physical prototyping on small FDM printers specifically designed for this purpose.
I2P has a dual focus, starting with the generation, refinement and improvement of the initial idea as well as the physical prototyping. A client will thus experience both added value with respect to the initial idea, plus relevant skills enhancement. The young entrepreneur has the added value of converting his initial ideas into a tangible 3D product, hence augmenting the simple 2D concept into a functional prototype on a 3D printer.
