Welcome to the Department of Visual Arts and Design

The Visual Arts and Design (VAD) Department comprises four disciplines: Graphic Design, Fashion Design, Photography and Fine Art.

Graphic Design

The focus of the Graphic Design programme is on educating socially responsible visual communicators who are well-prepared for the challenges of the multi-dimensional graphic design industry. Students of graphic design investigate real-world issues and develop a comprehensive understanding of contemporary graphic design practice.  Currently VUT offers the following qualifications in Graphic Design:

Years 1-3 = NDip: Graphic Design, a three-year qualification

Year 4 = BTech: Graphic Design, a one-year (full-time) or two years' (part-time) qualification

Year 5 = MTech: Graphic Design

Fashion Design

The core projection of the undergraduate programme in Fashion Design is visual practice with strong entrepreneurial learning. The course aims to provide a learning environment in which innovation, invention and originality can be developed within a range of different, but closely related fashion pathways. Work Integrated Learning is important to the students’ learning process as this module aims to emphasise the need to understand how real-life situations in industry operate. Currently VUT offers the following qualifications in Fashion Design:

Fine Art courses include a significant technology component up to third-year level, with further specialisation in fourth year. This component includes hands-on training in Fine Art (mainstream) and Fine Art Multimedia, including 3D product design, digital storytelling, animation and video.
