CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA or the Agency), an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology, has a mandate to enable and support technological innovation across all sectors of the economy in order to achieve socio-economic benefits for South Africa and enhance its global competitiveness.
The Agency is a public entity with the aim of enhancing the country’s capacity to translate a greater proportion of local research and development from higher education institutions, science councils, public entities and private research institutions into commercial technology products and services. | Student Wins $2,000 for Inventing Toothbrush Sterilizer

PITTSBURG, Pa., USA: A South African high school student has won first prize in the world's largest international pre-college science competition for a new toothbrush-sterilizing device. Through a one-year project, she found four disease-causing pathogens on household toothbrushes, especially on those from houses in rural areas, and developed a promising method that destroys these bacteria and prevents cross-contamination. |

The Royal Society of Chemistry is offering a £1,000 prize to anyone who can crack this age-old ice puzzle.
The problem of why hot water sometimes freezes faster than cold, known as the Mpemba effect, defeated Aristotle. We know that Aristotle said: "All paid jobs absorb and degrade the mind." We can be pretty sure he said: "One swallow does not make a summer." But we can hazard a guess that at some stage he would also have declared angrily: "This bloody ice thing is doing my head in."
