1ST ALUMNI CHAPTER FORMED IN LESOTHO

Two departments of the Vaal University of Technology, namely: Corporate Affairs and International Relations & Advancement Department teamed up to tackle a new value-added initiative under the umbrella of VUT Alumni Relations. VUT launched the first-ever International Alumni Chapter for its former Lesotho based students on Saturday, 12 May 2012 at the National Convention Centre (Manthabiseng) in Lesotho. The aim of the event was to encourage alumni from all corners of the globe to support the initiative of networking and social forums through the formation of VUT Alumni Chapters, focusing on academic, sport, cultural, spiritual and social groups.

The event also afforded a platform for ‘Dress a child to school’ campaign. The purpose of this campaign was to cultivate a culture of giving back to the community. The VUT Lesotho Alumni took a lead in supporting the initiative by donating school uniform in the form of shirts, jerseys, shoes, socks, etc. All items donated amounted to approximately 430 and were shared by Phomolong Secondary School and Mokhethoaneng Primary School according to age groups.

The initiative was also supported by VUT staff members, individuals and businesses in South Africa. The small, innocent faces of the learners were beaming with excitement as they received their donations. One could tell that it was a joyful moment for them. Present at the event were the VUT Rectorate, VUT Alumni, staff members, sponsors, media houses, parents and learners.
