It's graduation time again

April 2012 was marked and long anticipated by Vaal University of Technology students as a joyous month, as degrees were conferred upon graduates as a token of their educational achievement. The VUT celebrated the increased number of graduates which grew from 1878 in April 2011 to 2483 in April 2012. Furthermore, they were proud to confer 12 master’s degrees which is also an increase from the 4 master’s degrees which have been conferred last year.

After all the jubilation and excitement that took place at the VUT’s main campus in Vanderbijlpark from 16 to 20 April 2012, the VUT’s satellite campuses held their own graduation ceremonies at Kempton Park, Secunda and Upington. A number of SRC members, from all the campuses, were amongst those who graduated. This indicates that the VUT has student leaders who excel academically.

One of the highlights of the graduation was the presence of a distinguished VUT Alumni and fashion icon, David Tlale. He shared his real life experiences with graduates from the time of being a student to becoming a global trend-setter. “I am not an academic, but I am a creator of trends. If you can dream it you can do it. The power is in your hands” said Mr Tlale. David said that even though his garments have been on the runways of the world’s fashion capitals, it is important to remember that all the garments are made in South African designer from your very institution, the VUT.

Prof Irene Moutlana, Vice Chancellor & Principal, applauded all the graduates for their efforts and sacrifices that paid off on this very special day.  “Your parents have given you all you needed during the time of your studies. Through their powerlessness/dedication, they have made you powerful. It’s payback time to your society, your family and most of all your parents” said Prof Moutlana.
