VUT Open Day – a resounding success The Vaal University of Technology’s Vanderbijlpark campus was abuzz with activity on Saturday, 26 May 2012. Life Orientation teachers, HOD’s, principals and learners came in their numbers to the VUT’s Open Day. They came with busses, taxis and cars from as far as Venda, Harrismith, Musina, Louis Trichardt, Rustenburg, Welkom and Lichtenburg. The weather turned out to be perfect and events unfolded as planned. The Open Day was a resounding success as 5000 learners visited the campus. Some were proudly clad in their school uniform, while others chose to dress up for the occasion turning the campus into a colorful canvas. Some learners went for a tour of the institution and others posed for pictures taken with the VUT’s buildings as a backdrop. Learners could not contain their excitement as they visited the library and various faculties and departments. This left them with anticipation as well as an expectation of returning to the VUT to pursue a tertiary education. To add to the vibrant atmosphere, five-a-side soccer tournaments between the VUT and the visiting schools were hosted by the Sports Department. All the players were given meal vouchers as a reward for their participation. Contributing to the success of the event was the intense, behind the scenes preparation that took place. This included school visits, exhibitions, radio advertisements and interviews on local and national radio stations. Within the first two hours of the event, 2500 learners were briefed at the Desmond Tutu Great Hall and faculties and departments that exhibited on the day enjoyed vibrant interaction with learners. With approximately 21000 students and three delivery sites, the VUT is one of SA’s leading institutions of higher education offering well-equipped, state-of-the-art facilities. New buildings, which are found on the main campus, indicate the VUT’s expansion as well as the introduction of new programmes. These programmes are vital to serve the needs of our country and that of the global economy. The Vice-Principal of the New Horizon College in Harrismith, Mrs Helma Jacobs said that they were very impressed with the Open Day as it exceeded all their expectations. On their arrival, they were warmly welcomed by the security guards and were then met by the recruitment staff who took them on a tour of the institution. Mrs Erna Pelser, Academic Head of the college said: “The briefing in the hall gave us an indication of how reasonable and affordable the VUT’s fees are. This will offer our learners the opportunity to study at the VUT as many of them come from the rural areas of Qwa-Qwa and Tshiame and some from as far as Lesotho.” VUT Open Day – a resounding success The Vaal University of Technology’s Vanderbijlpark campus was abuzz with activity on Saturday, 26 May 2012.
