National Science Week VUT

Between the 30 July - 04 August 2012 Vaal University of Technology hosted the National Science Week as a call from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) to dedicate one week to the spheres of science and technology. Various high schools around Vaal region made their way to VUT in response to an invite from VUT Departments of Physics and (Non-Destructive Testing).

The event was graced by 1378 learners, including teachers and members of public. VUT hosted this annual event for the second time this year and as a National Science Week grant holder it managed to have a successful event through number of activities performed during the duration of the event. Some of the science related activities scheduled for the week included Real Life Application of Mathematics, Science show (Live Science), Career guidance, Role Modeling, Hands on activities, Presentations and Workshops for Learners. From day one to the last day we managed to accommodate about 1378 learners, at our University.

Through the Science show VUT showcased the value of science to people’s daily lives, the importance of science behind all the chemicals used on a daily basis. The show also displayed why people need science to make living spaces better for all. Other activities introduced to those who attended included Biosciences, Physics and Chemistry Lab equipments. The show also allowed learners to perform some of their High school experiments in realtime. During the Workshop learners were introduced to new methods of learning on how to become a best Mathematician or have Physical science expertise. Given the new methods, facilitators displayed a real life application of Mathematics.

During the career guidance session, it was explained which careers of science are valuable and how they can build a better South Africa for all its inhabitants. Overall, the event was a success and hopefully the scientists of tomorrow will play a leading role in science for the betterment of our country. VUT appreciates the support from SAASTA (South African Association of Science and Technology Agency) and DST to create awareness on the importance of Science and Technology in our country.
