Why Join a Union? Joining a union is like taking out an insurance policy; it is only when you are in "need" that you realize your investment. The logic being a union member is that as individuals we have very little protection against the system; however in unity we have strength. Does this mean I have to follow whatever the union says? No, you still maintain your right to choose, however you will be bound by agreements affecting your conditions of employment negotiated by the majority union (these would be binding on you even if you were not a member of the union). If you decide not to join a union, your salary will still be subject to an agency-shop fee deduction, where applicable. Perhaps the greatest advantage of being a union member is that whenever confranted with adversity in the work environment you will not be alone but have access to representation and professional assistance.
