Prof Masu acquired his Bachelor of Science (honours) from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, in 1979. In 1985, he became the first postgraduate student to complete a Master’s degree in the prescribed period of two years in Engineering in the history of the University of Nairobi. In the same year, he secured tenure as a Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at his alma mater.
From 1986, Prof Masu enrolled for his Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering with Leeds University (U.K) and graduated in 1989. He then became Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at Jomo Kenyatta University College of Agriculture and Technology in 1990 and was appointed to Head of Department the following year. In 1994 he became an Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the then University of Durban-Westville. In July 1996, he ascended to the position of Dean within the same Faculty until 2002 when he became Professor and Director of the School of Mechanical Engineering & Applied Mathematics at Central University of Technology, Free State.It is from this Institution that Prof Masu joins the VUT family.
Executive Dean: Human Sciences Prof C M van der Bank [BA(UP)(cum laude) BProc (Unisa) LL B (Unisa) LL M (Unisa) LL D (North West)]
Prof van der Bank is an associate professor of Law. She was awarded the prize for the best B Proc graduate. Prior to joining the University she was the CEO of SANCA for five years. She joined the University in 1996. Previously she held a lecturing post and a Principal lecturing post at the Vaal University of Technology. She has taught a wide range of subjects, including human rights, mercantile law, commercial law, law for public relations and law for tourism. She is also an admitted Advocate of the High Court of South Africa and has a particular interest in African discourse, especially the African Union and New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD). She is a member of National Patent Examination Board (PEB) and Academy of World Business, Marketing and Management Development. Her publications focus is on human rights and customary law. She is the author of a chapter in the Handbook of Urbanization and African Cultures with the title of "Law, Change, Human Rights, and Development in South Africa" Current research interest: constitutional law, administrative law, human rights, trafficking in persons and law of contracts. She has presented 2 National papers and 6 International papers and the author of several textbooks for students.
Executive Dean: Management Sciences ( Acting) Dr Andrea Garnett [BCom (PUCHE) (Cum Laude) BComHons (PUCHE) (Cum Laude) MCom (PUCHE) PhD Business Management (NWU)]
Dr Andrea Garnett joined the Vaal University of Technology as a lecturer in 1997. The 13 years that she been with VUT, she has gained experience in lecturing in a variety of disciplines progressing to the rank of senior lecturer and along the way has supervised numerous students towards the completion of their postgraduate studies. She is qualified primarily in the field of Business Management and is in possession of a B.Com (Marketing); B.Com (hons) – Marketing and Business Management and M.Com (Business Management). She obtained her PhD (Business Management) from the North West University in 2005, for the thesis entitled Creativity Barriers in South African Higher Education Institutions. She currently holds the position of Head of Department: Logistics in the Management Sciences faculty at VUT, and has been acting in the position of Executive Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences since the beginning of 2009. Her role as the Executive Dean, as well as the HOD: Logistics involves bringing strategic direction to the faculty and department, as well as managing the day-to-day operational requirements regarding all academic and administrative matters. Her areas of specialisation include approach to strategic management, organisational climate and creative thinking on which she has presented at various national and international conferences (and for which she has received numerous awards and accolades). She has published a variety of articles in accredited journals and research textbooks. She served on editorial boards for journals and has been asked to co-chair international conferences. Her research interests also extend to educational theory and entrepreneurial behaviour.
Dean: Sports Academy Mr G B Koen [BA: Bk-Ed(Stellenbosh University); BA (Hons) (Potchefstroom University for CHE); MA (PUfCHE) Doctor’s Degree (VUT) Running]
Experience Appointed Dean of the newly established Sports Academy. Previously appointed Dean of the Faculty of Human Sciences (VUT). Held the positions of Lecturer (PUfCHE) in painting, Head of Fine Arts Department (VUT), Director of the School for Art and Design (VUT), Art Teacher (Uitenhage), Architectural Draughtsman and Model Builder (Port Elizabeth). Was awarded Best Student Award in the 4th year (final year) at Stellenbosch University (received the Maggie Laubscher - and John van Reenen - bursaries.) Is affiliated to Athletics South Africa (ASA) as national coach to the hammer throw. Possesses over the highest athletic coaching qualification (ASA - level III and IAAF - level II). Also coach to amongst other, the South African; Africa and Commonwealth Hammer Throw record holder, Chris Harmse.
Research
Was awarded Researcher of the Year - at the VUT. Received an FRD - bursary for research done on Crafts Tech in the Pacific Circle, a bursary from the HSRC for research done on the Developing West - European Renaissance Landscape Painting Genre and NRF - accreditation for an arti fact (on Ceramic vessel- and glaze project). At present Co- editor of Throwers World, an athletic Mouth Piece enhancing athletic debate amongst throwers and coaches for javelin, shot put, discuss, hammer throw and Weight Throwing. Has written numerous articles for journals on art and athletics. His personal art works has been accepted on major National and International Competitions. [F.e. The National Corobrick Ceramic Competition, The Momentum Art Competition, Water Colour Society of South Africa, Gauteng (Kempton Park) Art Competition. Artworks included in numerous institutional, public and International collections. (Stellenbosch University, Potchefstroom University, England, USA and France).
Miscellaneous
-Received National Masters Colours for Athletics as well as Provincial Honorary Colours. -Athlete of the Year for Athletics Vaal Triangle. -Currently the South African Masters Short Hammer (Weight Throw) record holder. -Won the following International medals: bronze (Mijazaki, Japan), gold (Port Louis, Mauritius), bronze (Tata, Hungary), silver (San Sabastian, Spain), gold (Linz, Austria) gold (St. Dennis, Reunion). |
