The Department of Sports and Marketing at the Vaal University of Technology hosted a public lecture under the theme: ‘Move for life’.
Nationally October is Health month and with the departmental motto, Experience the benefits of physical activity across the lifespan, the department hosted the presentation to encourage the VUT community to keep fit and healthy.
Among the guest speakers was Professor Makama Andries Monyeki from the School for Biokinetics, Sport Science and Recreation at North West University’s Potchefstroom Campus.
Prof Monyeki opened his presentation by citing from Plato, saying: “Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise saves it and preserves it.”
He told the audience that people should always be active, even if only by doing a few movements daily. They should not just sit in one place the whole day. He pointed out that in South Africa a large percentage of people are obese and have sedentary lifestyles.
Prof Monyeki said that in this day and age not being active causes many different chronic diseases, however it doesn’t require a gym to be active in order to reduce the risk of getting such diseases; it takes only a few steps to stay healthy.
