Vaal University of Technology (VUT) welcomed first year students for 2020 by honouring those with the highest academic average in 2019. Mahlaela Abel, who was a first-year student in 2019 and registered for Safety Management, received the overall best student award in his faculty of Human Sciences and was also named best overall student in the whole institution.
“This is the first time receiving an award in my life,” said Mahlaela. He expressed his gratitude by sharing a little story about himself: He matriculated in 2007 and went out to work until he lost his job in 2018. He was then encouraged by his cousin to pursue a qualification in order to enhance his chances of being employable.
He motivated his fellow students and school-leavers by saying that it is never too late to go back to school to better your life.
“With the support I had from my study committee I managed to succeed. When you say yes to becoming a student, you have to say no to other things. Goal-setting requires a strategic plan for the semesters. Students who do better in general are the ones who take time to plan,” he said.
