Do not wish for it, work for it’ says successful VUT artist

There is nothing as inspiring as seeing a student who is serious and passionate about their studies and talent. Ivy Rihlampfu, a young and lively Baccalaureus Technologiae (BTech) Fine Arts graduate, is a great example of the saying: “Determination goes a long way”.

The strong-willed artist has her heart set on anything that has to do with art. She achieved one of her long-term goals recently when the artwork she sent out to prospective galleries was chosen to be exhibited at ONCA in Brighton in the United Kingdom (UK).  Her first solo show was a big success and a great experience for her.

Ms Rihlampfu draws her inspiration from South African street vendors. She documents their stories and also does portraits that celebrate their way of generating an income.

When asked why it is important for successful Vaal University of Technology (VUT) alumni to keep in contact with the institution, she said: “Mentoring is vital for undergraduates who aspire to be professional, practicing artists. They need someone who can motivate them on how to make it in the industry, so its people like us who will motivate them.” She said.

Ms Rihlampfu has her own mobile art gallery called Basile Art and Projects situated in Rosebank, Johannesburg which she founded in September 2018.  She recruits artists to exhibit at her gallery and holds monthly exhibitions for emerging artists to showcase their work.

The mobile gallery enables the artists to sell their artwork and helps customers to buy high-quality affordable art.

The vibrant artist says she has VUT to thank for all the knowledge she has acquired throughout her academic journey.
