In the past few years, the Department of Mathematics at Vaal University of Technology (VUT) has seen the need of giving back to the community. The department identified and adopted Ikhwezilokusa, a home for disabled children and mentally ill adults in De Deur.
The home was established by “Mme Lillian” formerly the principal of Zakhariyya Park Secondary School. She saw the needs of ill-treated mentally ill people and children with disabilities. She was motivated by her own son who is deaf and who was struggling to fit in at school.
“We as individuals, we struggle to accept disability. When it’s your child, it becomes a challenge. Not many have the experience of how to handle them and they struggle to adapt to their environments but, because of the love I have for disabled kids, I decided to resign from my previous work and build a home for them,” said Mme Lillian.
She was touched to receive a donation of gifts from VUT which included clothes and food. She said that last year, in winter, VUT donated a heater and they feel very honoured that each year they receive donations filled with the warmth of love from the Department of Mathematics.
Principal of the Ikhwezilokusa Primary School, Ms. Phakathi also gave thanks to VUT for visiting their home and school. She said that they struggle to teach their learners due to a shortage of materials but, because of the love they receive from outside, they are able to keep on going no matter what their circumstances may be.
