With women’s month commemorations still in full steam in South Africa, the Residence Living and Learning Department at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) held an Indaba for female students residing at the University’s residences.
Like most events aimed at marking this annual occasion, the VUT Residence Women Indaba also highlighted the challenges faced by women, but with a greater focus on strategies to address them.
During the event, speakers from various departments within the University engaged attendees on topical issues including self-care, personal development, career success, academic achievement, gender equality, and women’s rights. The gathering, held during the day, set the stage for the Residence Women Gala Dinner which was held later that evening at VUT Quest Conference Centre, in Vanderbijlpark.
This dinner celebrated female students’ accomplishments in academics, sports, arts, and community service, enhancing their confidence and motivation. Additionally, the gala dinner fostered a sense of community among female students, offering a platform to share experiences, exchange ideas, and collaborate on projects. It also included engaging activities like plays, student poems, musical performances, a best dancer, and a best dresser competition.
According to organisers, hosting such events promotes personal and professional growth, empowerment, networking, skill-building, and inspiration among female students – which by extension, contribute to a more inclusive and diverse academic environment at VUT.
