The Annual Cancer Relay for Life, initiated by the CANSA foundation took place from 2-3 September at North West University, Vaal Triangle Campus.
The objective of the annual relay is to challenge the community to stay awake throughout the whole evening; to survive the battle against cold and sleep, as a symbol of the struggle that cancer patients must go through to survive. In addition, the event aims to raise money for cancer cure research and for medical expenses related to cancer treatment for the needy.
This year, the department of Legal Sciences, led by Prof Linda Muswaka, accepted the challenge as part of their community engagement to show solidarity with cancer survivors, their relatives, cancer patients and those who have lost the battle against the disease.
The team members who stayed awake the whole evening are challenging all other departments to do the same next year in support of cancer research initiatives in South Africa.
