The Department of Tourism and Integrated Communication, Faculty of Human Sciences at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) recently hosted a symposium focusing on the different career paths and opportunities within the Tourism industry.
The purpose of the symposium was to broaden the tourism students’ knowledge and understanding of the vast careers that are available within the industry, as well as to equip them with the necessary information on acquiring learnerships, internships and job opportunities within the industry.
This symposium also served as an opportunity to link academia with industry practice to remain relevant. Although the primary focus was to assist third-year students with placement opportunities as they are expected to do their WIL (work integrated learning) for six months in the second semester, all tourism students across all levels of study were invited to attend.
Companies that were invited to address students include the National Department of Tourism (NDT), Culture, Art, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority (CATHSSETA), Awesome Travel, Leoka B&B, Holiday Tours, Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) and VUT alumni Ms Matilda Mashapa.
Taking to the podium, the organiser, Dr Konanani Thwala thanked the guests, VUT staff and students for availing themselves for the event. She further said that the feedback from the industry partners and the students was evident that there was a gap and need for such initiatives.
Notably, the guest speakers indicated that they would love to have more initiatives such as this, citing that they help in growing the Tourism industry and set students to be ready for the industry.
During the session, three students secured WIL placements at one of the companies.
