Lesego Bruce Matee is the manager for the Evaluation Unit within the Centre for Academic Development (CAD) at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT). His interest is in the use of technology in the student evaluation of teaching as well as the professional development of academic staff within the university context. He has 20 years’ experience in professional training and development of higher education teachers, orientation training of newly appointed academics, monitoring and evaluation of teaching practices in the higher education context.
He holds a B. Com (Business Management & Economics), B. Ed and M. Ed (Educational Management) from UNISA. He is currently busy with a PhD in the systematic implementation of evaluation of teaching practices in higher education context.
Teaching Quality and Evaluation
The Evaluation Unit conducts evaluation surveys related to the improvement of the quality of teaching and learning within VUT.
The South African Survey of Student Engagement (SASSE) is conducted by senior students while the Beginning University Survey of Student Engagement (BUSSE) is conducted by first year students. Both SASSE & BUSSE are conducted once every two years in order to obtain data about student experiences within VUT. Data collected is then used to shape teaching and learning practices within VUT in order to improve the quality of teaching and learning.
RATE- Rector’s Awards for Teaching Excellence is conducted annually where Lectures participate to demonstrate excellence in their teaching practice. RATE is one of the mechanisms used at VUT to promote the improvement of the quality of teaching practice. Academics who get the highest recognition award get an opportunity represent VUT in the HELTASA (Higher Education learning and Teaching Association of South Africa) national higher education teaching excellence awards.
Teaching evaluation and module evaluation are conducted for all Lecturers and Modules every semester. Evaluations are conducted through the use of the clicker technology or the online evaluation tool. All students are encouraged to participate in these surveys to maximise the effectiveness of their learning experiences within VUT. The feedback obtained is used to facilitate in enhancing good teaching practices for individual academics, departments and faculties with the purpose of promoting students’ learning as well as students’ success.
