VUT Administrator, Professor Iron Rensburg addressing the VUT community during Imbizo
The VUT Administrator, Professor Iron Rensburg called a Staff and students Imbizo on Thursday, 20 February 2020 in response to the assessors’ report that was gazetted by the Department of Higher Education and Training on Thursday, 13 February 2020. The imbizo was facilitated by Administrator who allowed staff and students to engage with members of the panel.
The engagement involved the questions on the current state of the University and any action that would be implemented regarding those who were implicated. Both staff and students wanted reassurance of the University’s future.
One of the questions raised by staff was: “What will happen to the University after the administrator’s term has come to an end?”
The administrator said that changing VUT should not be up to external people but should be an internal process that is owned by its community.
He said that change at VUT should start with residence renovations as this was one of the greatest concerns among students and staff who consider them to have a 0-star grading currently.
In closing, Prof Rensburg said that the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande advised him to have one-on-one assessments of management staff, to evaluate their competence, capabilities, commitment and performance. These would be followed by lifestyle audit for staff on post levels 1- 6.
The Administrator also confirmed that the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) contacted him and made an appointment to see him in relation to the assessor’s report.
