On 30 March 2023, the VUT Community Engagement Department hosted the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) at the Desmond Tutu Great Hall.

In collaboration with the National Department of Home Affairs (Gauteng Office), Gauteng Department of Cooperative Governance (GCOGTA), Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the GPL is leading a Voter Education and Registration Campaign aimed at promoting active citizenry and enhancing constitutional democracy.

The campaign aims to promote cooperative governance as well as participatory democracy through rigorous civic education programmes targeting different sectorial groups guided by the country’s founding values of human dignity.

According to Mr Joseph Radebe, the Acting Director Community Engagement at VUT, this strategic partnership will not only benefit the students for the above reasons, VUT students will soon be exposed in the work environment of parliament through envisaged work integrated internship programs and bursaries from the GPL, adding that an official MOU between the two institutions is underway.

The event was attended by different community stakeholders and VUT students.
