On Thursday, 08 September 2022, a delegation from Redshift, a Johannesburg-based cyber security company, visited the Vaal University of Technology (VUT).
Mr Itumeleng Matshego, a lecturer in the Information Communication Technology (ICT) Department, within the Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences, arranged the visit for ICT students with the primary aim of providing them with an opportunity to interact first-hand with industry experts.
Welcoming the delegation and kickstarting the session, Dr Rene Van Eck: ICT Senior Lecturer, said the visit marked the beginning of a fruitful relationship between VUT and Redshift. She added that she hoped that after the visit, the students would be nudged into cyber security which she says is in demand because of the continuing exponential rise in cybercrime in South Africa and the rest of the world.
In their presentation to an intrigued group of students, Redshift representatives gave insights into the online security field. They further outlined the company’s scope of work which includes hacking & penetration testing, warm gaming data protection and attack simulation. To students’ interest, they also touched on whom they see as reasonable candidates and the different roles within Redshift.
If the interactive Q&A session in the end, is anything to go by, then the visit was a great success and well-received by the students, who seemingly enjoyed asking questions about cyber security.
“The session was great and informative. I liked how the Redshift representatives gave students a platform to ask questions,” said Siyabulela Biyo, a 2nd-year Information Systems student.
With a solid rapport now established, Redshift reiterated that they aim to build a long-term relationship with, and will stay in contact with VUT, adding that they enjoyed imparting knowledge to the students. Click here to see more photos: Industry visit-ICT
