VUT MOURNS THE PASSING OF ITS ALUMNUS AND FREE STATE MEC OF EDUCATION, DR PULE HERBERT MAKGOE.
07 March 2023
The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of its alumnus and Free State MEC for Education, Dr Pule Herbert Makgoe on his untimely passing. Dr Tate Makgoe, as he was affectionately known, passed away alongside one of his bodyguards, after a horrific car crash in the early hours of Sunday.
Dr Makgoe graduated for his Diploma in Chemical Engineering in 1982 from the erstwhile Vaal Triangle Technikon. Again, at its Autumn Graduation ceremony in September 2018, VUT’s Faculty of Management Sciences, awarded him an honorary doctorate in Business Administration for his passion to transform the schooling system in the Free State and by extension, the country largely. He was dedicated to capacitating the educators in public education system to achieve their targets and ensuring good corporate governance in schools.
In his acceptance speech of the honorary doctorate, Dr Makgoe commended VUT for its growth and development over the years and contribution of its graduates to making South Africa a better place to live in. He further pledged his commitment to working with VUT to improve the quality of education in schools, thus ensuring that Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) become subjects that allow the choosing of careers that will yield an impact in the social development of this country.
As an institution dedicated to widening access to education to the disadvantaged and marginalized, VUT is proud to have publicly associated with Dr Makgoe – not only as an alumnus and a recipient of an honorary doctorate from the institution, but also for the principles he stood for, of bridging the gap of inequality in education.
With his sterling record of top national matric pass rates for the Free State for the past four consecutive years, with numbers recorded at more than 80% each year, his passing has been described not only as a huge loss to the province but the country’s education fraternity in its entirety.
May his soul rest in peace!
