Facilitator: Mr. Daniel Tshabalala demonstrating how to do the First Aid
On 6-7th April 2022 selected Vaal University of Technology (VUT) staff from various departments across the institution participated in a two-day training session offered by the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) department.
Eligible departmental nominees will serve as resident Health and Safety Representatives (First Aiders).in their departments.
The training was coordinated by Mr. Daniel Tshabalala, a VUT Alumnus and currently a Facilitator and Assessor from Polokeho Occupational Risk Consulting Pty Ltd.
The purpose of the training is to enable representatives to be competent in preserving life while understanding First Aid requirements and the steps to take during an emergency.
First Aid Training is a requirement stipulated in the General Safety Regulation 3 in the OHS Act 85 of 1993.
The OHS department intends to train nominees to become First Aiders who are willing to assist during an emergency and reduce recovery time. This will lead to less time lost from injuries, preserve casualty life, prevent worsening situations and alert emergency services.
Mr. Mokgele Tsiu, the VUT Safety Officer, mentioned that knowledge of First Aid promotes a sense of safety and wellbeing amongst people. The training is appropriate for providing First Aid procedures during an emergency and treating common injuries.
He further explained that employees are encouraged to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and colleagues. “Employees should obey health and safety rules and procedures laid down by their employer,” he said.
“While on duty, if involved in an incident which may affect your health or has caused injuries to your wellbeing, report such incident to your line manager and first aider. Employees are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the Safety Health and Environment (SHE) policy and participate in SHE programmes,” said Tsiu.
