Dick Fonseca, well known as Luis D, with Sbusiso Vilakazi and Tumisho Coinelius Maepa as Vaal University of Technology students took part in the Youth Expo, an entrepreneurship competition that was hosted at the Nasrec centre in Johannesburg from 13-17 June.
The purpose of the event was to empower the youth and fund young entrepreneurs. It also gave students the opportunity to go and see exhibits that showcase options for young people such as jobs, careers and entrepreneurship in which Mr Fonseca pitched his innovative solar study lamp.
He won in the category of entrepreneurship and qualified for funding worth R100 000 for improving his business ideas.
He was up against Mr Vilakazi and Mr Maepa who entered their fitness brand called ‘own your body’ in a top ten elimination round where each was given three minutes to pitch ideas.
Mr Fonseca also runs a company called Young Innovative Designs that uses technology to design clothing. Undergraduate participants are given a minimum of six-months to a year of hands-on experience (fashion design) at the company.
“I was inspired by the forth industrial revolution’s impact on business,” he said.
