WOMEN’S MONTH EVENT PUTS FEMALE STUDENTS FIRST
By: Ramaesela Phasha 08 September 2022
To conclude the campuswide series of Women’s Month activities at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), the Living and Learning Department hosted a successful event to honour all female students at the university residences. Under the theme, “Me, Myself and I”, the event took place at the VUT Lapa.
Different speakers from within the University and other external organisations addressed the event, covering topical issues including gender-based violence (GBV), sexuality, values, diversity, and relationship skills.
Pastor Ester Mavundla, the University Chaplain, blessed and applauded some female students who fell (became pregnant in their first year of study) and managed to stand again to continue their studies. She encouraged all female students to stand on their feet and know their worth and purpose for them to achieve their goals.
Ms Ramaesela Phasha (Moabelo), the Living and Learning Manager, expressed her sincere gratitude to all who honoured the invitation and participated in the event. She further encouraged all the female students to support and assist one another in becoming responsible adults. “Divided we will fall and united we will stand as we make our residences, home away from home”, she said.
The department, in collaboration with Central Housing Committee (CHC), committed to undertaking a joint campaign for eradicating gross human rights violations. They envisaged that each year the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse would become a platform both to heighten awareness and take stock of the gaps and achievements to ensure sustained, measurable efforts to end gender violence in our institution.
