37 local youngsters receive life-changing digital literacy and 3-D printing certificates from VUT

In a world where digital literacy and 3D printing are not just advantages but necessities, thirty-seven (37) learners received certificates on Wednesday, 13 March 2024, at Sharpeville KITSO Information Development Centre upon completing their e-skills training program. This program was facilitated by the Northern Cape/Southern Gauteng E-skills CoLab department at Vaal University of Technology (VUT).
Led by Antoinette Lombard, Director for Short Learning Programme and Skills Development Provision Department at VUT, along with facilitators Darryl Lund, who is also managing the project and Xolani Nyathi, the aim was to equip individuals with essential skills to shape a competitive and inclusive society.
The event, held amidst an air of celebration and accomplishment, highlighted the commitment of both learners and educators towards embracing the digital age and 3D printing. Established with the vision of bridging the digital divide and fostering a culture of continuous learning, the VUT e-skills program has been instrumental in empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills required to thrive in today’s digital landscape.
The ceremony commenced with words of encouragement from prominent figures such as the former SABC Group Executive for News and Current Affairs, Mr. Phil Molefe, a veteran journalist, and Media Executive with experience in both print and electronic media, and the Chief Executive Officer of Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Mr. Peter Skosana. Mr. Molefe emphasized the importance of enthusiasm for learning, boldness, and innovation, referencing the historical significance of KITSO as the old Sharpeville Police station and urging learners to strive for a brighter future.
Throughout their training, the learners were exposed to a diverse range of e-skills, including digital literacy, 3D printing, and an introduction to Data Science. Hands-on practical exercises and interactive sessions provided valuable insights into utilizing digital tools and technologies to solve real-world problems and seize opportunities in the digital and 3D marketplace.
Despite the challenges encountered, learners exhibited unwavering determination and perseverance, a sentiment echoed by Blessing Mokhele on behalf of the learners. Their dedication, coupled with the guidance and support of their mentors, culminated in the successful completion of the program and the attainment of their certificates, testament to their hard work and commitment to personal and professional development.
As they received their certificates on stage, smiles of pride and accomplishment lit up the faces of the learners, reflecting the transformative impact of their e-skills training journey. For many, this milestone represents not just a certificate but a gateway to new opportunities, career advancement, and economic empowerment.
