The South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) Student Chapter under the department of Electrical Engineering took students on a site visit to learn about the field of Aviation which is unknown to many. The aim of the visit was to expose the students to Air Traffic Control and navigation to broaden their career prospects, and how electrical engineering concepts are applied in the field.
The site visit was held at the Air traffic & Navigation Service in Kempton Park near the Oliver Tambo (O.R Tambo) International airport on August 28. It composed of students currently in their S2 to S4, studying light current electrical engineering.
The students were given a brief background of air traffic control and navigation and the necessary skills one must possess to effectively become an Air Traffic Controller. Thereafter, the students were taken on a tour of the facilities (indoors and outdoors) which was much exciting for the students and also had an opportunity to directly ask the Engineering instructor, Mr Boje who was also very welcoming of questions and gave satisfying responses.
The SAIEE Student Chapter is electrical engineering organization that aims at promoting Academic Excellence and bridging the Gap between Students & Industry as this is one of its core commitment. It further aims to expose them to the different sectors of industry in order to build career direction.
