On 5 February, the Vaal University of Technology’s Community Engagement Department collaborated with the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), Correctional Services, Traffic Department, Social Development, South African Police Services (SAPS), Rand Water and Eskom in donating clothes to needy school children in the Barrage area near Vanderbijlpark.
VUT donated casual clothes and SASSA donated school uniforms to the learners at Ramosukula Secondary School, which is a quantile 1 state school located at 1 Tahiti Estate Farm, while the above mentioned Government Departments went to the nearby Barrage Primary School to donate school uniforms and bags.
Some of the VUT’s donation came from a group of students who called themselves “Own Your Body”. The group operates a gym at Isak Steyl Stadium, from Monday to Fridays at 4pm and they encourage their members to donate clothing and toiletries as part of their join-up fee.
Learners from Ramosukula Secondary School, accepted the gifts with joy and said that they appreciate what VUT and the government is doing for them. Over their excitement some of them wore those donated clothes immediately on top of their school uniform
Mrs Nombuso Kamolane and Ms Nthabiseng Mahlangu from the Community Engagement Department, said that it was their pleasure to assist as they love and care about the wellbeing of the learners and they shouldn’t let their backgrounds hold them back from achieving their full life potentials and dreams, they wish to see them succeed in life.
