In an effort to foster transparency, communication, and community involvement, the newly appointed Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), Prof Khehla Ndlovu, recently took to the airwaves for an exclusive interview with the University’s radio station, VUTFM.
The interview took place in the station’s vibrant newly revamped studios, creating an informal yet professional atmosphere which allowed for a relaxed and open conversation, enabling him to connect with the VUT and Vaal community on a personal level.
This engaging conversation served as a crucial component of Prof Ndlovu’s ongoing integrated stakeholder engagement roadshow – a commitment he made when he took over office at the beginning of February.
The interview primarily sought to open window for students and staff into Prof Ndlovu’s background, leadership approach, and vision for the institution. Among some of his focus areas, Ndlovu said he aims to address infrastructure challenges, promote student success, and foster technological entrepreneurship. He highlighted VUT’s research infrastructure and commitment to green technologies, positioning the university as a leader in innovation.
During the interview, Ndlovu also emphasized the importance of engaging with stakeholders and understanding the impact of past administrations on the university community. He stressed the need for internal reflection and collaboration to address challenges such as infrastructure maintenance and student housing. He also outlined his vision for students, aiming to cultivate a culture of technological entrepreneurship and leadership, rather than solely focusing on getting employment. He emphasized the role of research and innovation in addressing societal challenges, showcasing VUT’s capabilities in areas such as non-destructive testing and green technologies.
While the VC’s assignment is clearly cut, he adds that what is most crucial is for him, along with team, ensure that the VUT plan aligns with the direction that the institution is taking. “To what extent are we able to allocate resources toward that goal? In some circumstances, I will have to provide instructions while also ensuring that decisions are made at all levels. Also, if no decisions are taken, nothing happens”, he said, adding that the people who are now at VUT have made a commitment to ensure the VUT becomes the number one university in the UOTs, therefore we should work together for this vision to see the light of day.
