SAPS K9 Unit demonstration bolsters VUT Policing students’ learning experience
The Department of Legal Sciences (Policing Section) at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) recently welcomed the South African Police Service Dog Unit (K9) at the Izak Steyl Stadium for an exclusive demonstration.
Although open to the broader VUT Community, the exclusive event aimed to provide an enlightening experience for the eager Diploma, Advanced Diploma, and Postgraduate Diploma in Policing students.
The demonstration offered attendees a captivating insight into the indispensable role played by K9 Dog Unit in law enforcement, displaying the remarkable skills and capabilities of the trained police dogs. From DNA detection to explosives detection, suspect apprehension, and patrol duties, the demonstration showcased the diverse tasks executed by theis array of specialized working dogs, each trained for specific tasks crucial to police operations.
Students in attendance found the event seamlessly integrated with their academic curriculum. It presented a unique learning opportunity, bridging theoretical knowledge with practical application. The demonstration shed light on the multifaceted responsibilities of law enforcement, enriching students’ understanding of the field.
- Some of the day’s impressive demonstrations included:W/O Van Rooyen and his dog Alwyn B8302 successfully located hidden drugs during container searches, detecting both dagga and mandrax with precision.
- Sgt Ziqubu and his dog Danny B7271 demonstrated remarkable skill in detecting explosives, ensuring safety protocols were followed.
- Sgt Stemele and Sgt. Mira and their dog Hulk B8106 showcased their proficiency in apprehending suspects involved in serious offenses, ensuring swift administration of justice.
