The month of January is extremely a busy month at the same time it is a month where almost everyone recuperates from the festive season break. At this time of the year, most of all the institutions of higher learning around the country are mainly focusing on registrations of new and returning students.

The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) is not unique as it ensures access to Higher Education to those that had performed well in matric. The week of 19-23 January 2014 was declared in the VUT calendar as the Orientation Week where first year students get to know the institution and its surroundings.

On the first day of the orientation programme, the students were welcomed by Professor Irene Moutlana, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal and Professor Alwyn Louw, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic and Research.  Management encouraged students to seriously consider their studies as their primary focus during their stay at VUT and everything else as secondary.

The orientation programme involved dividing Faculties into groups. The new students wore different colour caps representing their respective faculties to ensure they remain within the same faculty group.

Campus tours were undertaken throughout the week to familiarize students with the surroundings that will soon be their home away from home. Students were also taken to various venues in and around the campus to ensure that when classes begin, they will all be familiar with the campus and know how to navigate their way to different venues.

Students had a bit of fun at the residences as they played various games to get to know one another prior to embarking on their first campus tours. Some of the student said they were thrilled that they had finally made it to enroll at the Vaal University of Technology whilst others said they hope that they will graduate on record time and failure is not an option for them.
