On Thursday, 28 April 2022, approximately 500 Vaal University of Technology (VUT) students received food parcels donated by Tiger Brands. The distribution took place at the Victim Empowerment Centre (VEC) situated at the main residence.
The Tiger Brands donation is one of VUT initiatives aimed at providing support to unfunded students.
The food packs were obtained through a relationship that the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dan Kgwadi, has built with Tiger Brands over the years.
During the distribution process, the Student Representative Council (SRC) was represented by the following executive members:
- Mr Serge Ntini- Deputy President;
- Ms Nonhlanhla Msibi- Gender and Transformation Officer, and
- Mr Wiseborn Ndlovu- Academic Officer.
The SRC applauded the initiative to assist students who are neither funded by NSFAS nor hold any other bursary. The student leadership has also embarked on sourcing more sponsors to help with similar donations to eliminate hunger amongst all VUT students.
Ms Faith Mocoancoeng, Welfare and VEC Manager expressed appreciation for the support that the VEC enjoys from the Office of the Vice-Chancellor. She further mentioned that the VEC has its own database of disadvantaged students which was updated after working in collaboration with the Finance Department, utilizing a tool that is able to identify qualifying students.
The VUT appreciates the gesture made by Tiger Brands and hopes that the relationship will grow from strength to strength in the coming months and years.
